Australia Day

January 28, 2011

This past Wednesday was Australia Day, a public holiday where “you get together, drink beer, have a barbie, listen to Triple J’s Hottest 100, and celebrate Australia!” -according to Mark- which I think is a good holiday enough! We did exactly that. One of Mark’s friends even had a face painting kit- which came out after a few beers. Most of us were adorned with the requisite Aussie flag, but Drew requested to have a boxing kangaroo. Good on ya, Drew.

When I Googled Australia Day, I found out that it celebrates the day that the British arrived with their first fleet of ships at Sydney Cove in 1788. The Brits stole the land back from the Dutch who had previously claimed it, and called it a day. It’s been officially celebrated by the Aussies since 1818. And (just assuming) they’ve been drinking beer and a having barbies ever since.
