g’day!

September 16, 2010

It was our first full day in Australia today and we’re definitely loving it so far! It made it a bit easier to adjust having slept 12 FULL hours on the plane (thanks to some sleeping aids that worked seriously well) and felt pretty refreshed when we landed in Sydney. And it was very much in our favor that we were clear-headed coming off the 15 hour plane ride because going through customs was quite the cluster f*ck… an airport attendant came on the PA and announced that 7 international jumbo jets had landed in the past hour. So you can probably imagine the craziness! Luckily we made it onto our last leg and arrived in Adelaide with no problem, with good ol’ Mark waiting to pick us up!

Today, Mark and his roommate Coppin took Drew and I on a little drive through the Barossa wine valley, pretty much an equivalent to what Napa is to California or Tuscany to Italy… it’s Australia’s largest wine producing area with lots of great food and beautiful rolling hills. We went on a stroll through a nature preserve and saw our first kangaroos here in Oz. Thirteen to be exact! We also stopped by a cheese shop in Angaston (another small town very close to Nuriootpa, where Mark lives) where we got to sample some of the local cheeses. We brought home some tasty brie made on site, and a gorgonzola infused with wine grape peel. Mm! There’s going to be a big ‘wine show’ in Angaston this weekend (600 wineries!) so we’ll definitely be busy tasting all the good local wine and eating amazing cheese. Our lives are so hard. Ha!

Tomorrow we plan to see Cat in Adelaide and spend some time in the city. So excited to see her!

Oh, and FYI: in Australia… the water does swirl in the opposite direction, fries are ‘chips’, and candy is called ‘lollies’.

Cheers!

Julia & Drew
